TMI Episcopal’s Mario Rivela Chapter of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (Spanish Honor Society) inducted 26 new members in a ceremony held April 19 in the school’s All Saints Chapel.
The Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica is an honor society for high-school students of high academic achievement who are enrolled in Spanish and/or Portuguese, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
Students in 10 th grade or higher who have maintained an honor average in the study of Spanish or Portuguese for at least three semesters are eligible for membership.
New TMI members are: Zachary Adkisson, Yara Akhrass, Simon Bruhn, William Carsten, Isabel Castaño, Joshua Cross, Bailey Dietzmann, Gavin Freiler, Ella Hirsch, Claire Hughes, Olivia Iskander, Emily Lawitz, Montserrat Martínez, Sebastián Martínez Sotomayor, Illeana Molina, Alessandro Moya, Avery Neiman, Anish Padala, Javier Ramos, Razik Rehman, Lydia Saucedo, Julieta Vazquez-Martínez, Nicholas Van Steenberg, Mary Warder, Rachel Zhang and Amy Zheng.
The program also included a recitation by Nicholas Van Steenberg of the poem, Soneto a Cristo Crucifado (Sonnet to the Crucified Christ), written anonymously in the 16 th century; and singing by Montserrat Martinez and Sebastian Martinez Sotomayor of Sal y limon (Salt and Lemon).
The TMI Corps of Cadets (JROTC) provided a color guard, and Upper School Division Head Matthew Blake, Ed.D., congratulated the inductees. Chapter President Briana Quintanilla and officers Mia Jamison, Kai McClary, Lorelei McDowell and Dana Salinas helped Spanish teachers Jodi Meyer and Lucy Sobreviñas with the organization and refreshments.
The TMI chapter is named after Mario Rivela, who taught Spanish there from 1967 until his retirement in 2000 and was present for this year’s ceremony, along with Sylvia Gonzalez, who taught Spanish at TMI from 1999 to 2017. The Society was organized in 1953 as the Spanish National Honor Society, and the name was changed in 1959 to Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica. At present, there are
more than 2,000 national and international chapters.
TMI Episcopal has announced spring Cadet of the Semester awards for two members of the Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets, the school’s JROTC program.

Latin students from TMI Episcopal brought home honors in many categories from the Texas State Junior Classical League (JCL) convention, held April 13-15 at Naaman Forest High School in Garland.
TMI Episcopal juniors Bridget Lynch and Annie Notzon spoke to the April 10 meeting of the Dominion Rotary Club about their experiences at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference (RYLA), held Jan. 12-15 at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels. The Dominion Rotary Club sponsors two students from TMI every year to attend RYLA.
