Example: Jeff, who is 73, has a large IRA. He knows that except for 2020 he must withdraw a required minimum distribution from that IRA and pay taxes on the amount he withdraws. Jeff decides to have his IRA manager send his required minimum distribution (RMD), or some part of that distribution up to $100,000 a year, directly to TMI. Jeff knows he will avoid the taxes that he would otherwise have to pay on the amount he gives.
